The beautiful 18th Century Map of the Manor of Claines by John Doharty Junior (which includes Northwick), held by Worcestershire Record Office, has been conserved and digitised to provide an irreplaceable resource for research and education.

The 1751-53 Map of the Manor of Claines, by John Doharty, Junior is an invaluable resource for research into the history of north Worcester, covering lands north of Salt Lane (or Castle Street as it is today) all the way to Hawford in the north, Tolladine to the east and the River Severn on the west. Not only does the map depict the landscape at that time, with beautifully drawn illustrations of buildings, but it is also accompanied by a fascinating terrier document, detailing land ownership and tenants, field names, acreage and land use. This is an important, early, snapshot in time, which has enabled historians to trace back through property deeds to tell the story of this area of Worcester as far back as the medieval period.

The map itself had until recently been in an unstable condition, requiring extensive conservation work, in particular on the southern-most portion of the map, which had been produced on a thinner piece of parchment and attached to the main body. The Northwick Manor Community Heritage Project has been very pleased to be in a position, through Heritage Lottery Funding, to facilitate necessary conservation of the map by Paper Conservation specialist Moira Buick. To view reports on both the condition of the document before conservation, and on the work that took place, please go to our publications and reports page.

We are also delighted to announce that full digitisation of the map has been undertaken by Worcestershire Historic Environment and Archaeology Service and is now available online at the Worcestershire Tithe and Inclosure Map Project website.
